Vehicle Eligibility Checker · 2026

Which Uber tiers your car qualifies for.

Year + type + city → the tiers you can drive in.

Your eligible tiers
3 of 7 tiers

UberX

✓ Eligible

4-door, 15-year rule passes (2022 ≤ 2011 cutoff = OK).

Uber Comfort

✓ Eligible

Mid-tier sedan, 7-year cap — qualifies.

Uber XL

Not eligible

XL needs a vehicle with 6 passenger seats (3-row SUV or minivan).

Uber Premier

Not eligible

Premier requires a luxury or executive-class vehicle.

Uber Black

Not eligible

Black requires a luxury-class executive sedan.

Uber Black SUV

Not eligible

Black SUV needs a luxury 3-row SUV (Suburban, Escalade, etc.) 5 years or newer.

Uber Eats

✓ Eligible

Uber Eats accepts almost any vehicle (and bikes / scooters in many markets). You're in.

Final approval depends on Uber's in-app inspection in some cities and on your driving record. This checker covers the published year + type + city rules. If you're marginal on one tier, Uber Eats almost always still works.

The Rules

Year · Type · City How this checker decides

Year rule. Most U.S. cities require a vehicle 15 years old or newer (so 2009 or later in 2024). NYC tightens that to 10 years. Comfort drops to 7. Premier and Black drop to 5.

Type rule. UberX needs a 4-door car. XL needs 6 passenger seats (3-row SUV or minivan). Comfort needs a sedan-class vehicle. Premier needs a luxury sedan or luxury SUV. Black is luxury executive sedans only; Black SUV is luxury 3-row SUVs (Suburban, Escalade, etc.).

City rule. Some cities have extra requirements — TLC license in NYC, Houston permit, Philadelphia PPA permit. Those aren't modeled here because they don't affect tier eligibility, just whether you can drive at all in that city. Check inside the Uber Driver app.

What this doesn't tell you. The final word is Uber's in-app inspection, where they check body damage, tinted windows, brake/tire condition, and seatbelt function. A 7-year-old Camry on paper qualifies for UberX; if it's got a cracked windshield and bald tires, Uber will still reject it until you fix those.

FAQ

Frequently asked Vehicle eligibility FAQs

What are the Uber driver vehicle requirements?

For UberX (the standard tier in most U.S. cities), you need a 4-door car generally 15 years old or newer, in good cosmetic condition, with no commercial branding. New York City is stricter: 10 years old or newer. Higher tiers add year, make, and trim restrictions. Eats accepts almost any vehicle and even bikes/scooters in many markets.

What's the age limit for an Uber car?

Most U.S. cities require model year 2009 or newer (15 years old as of 2024). NYC requires 2015 or newer. Higher tiers tighten further: Uber Comfort requires 7 years or newer, Uber Premier and Black require 5 years or newer. The exact rules vary by city — your in-app inspection will be the final word.

Can I drive UberXL with a 5-seat SUV?

No. UberXL requires a vehicle that seats 6 passengers (plus the driver) — so 3-row SUVs and minivans only. A standard 5-seat SUV qualifies for UberX but not XL.

What if my car doesn't qualify for UberX?

Two options. First, try Uber Eats — delivery is much more permissive about vehicles and even accepts bikes and scooters in many markets. Second, look at Uber's vehicle rental partners (Hertz, Avis, HyreCar) — they rent vehicles pre-qualified for UberX with insurance bundled in. Many drivers use rentals for their first 30 days to claim the sign-up bonus, then switch to their own car.
