How much should you tip an Uber driver?
The honest 2026 answer — the percentages, the round-up moves, when to tip more, when not to tip at all, and how the in-app tipping flow actually works.
Tip 15–20%, same as a sit-down restaurant. Round up on short trips. Add a few dollars when the driver helps with bags or it's a late-night ride. Skip if the trip went badly. Uber drivers do see the tip amount — but only after the rating, so it doesn't change your rating in real time.

Pair a $0 tip with a written rating comment so Uber sees the reason. Drivers who consistently underperform get flagged when riders bother to leave specifics.

Tipping was added in 2017
Uber didn't support in-app tipping for its first 8 years. The company added it in July 2017 after years of pressure from drivers and in response to Lyft (which had tipping from the start). Today, every Uber ride and Eats order in the U.S. has a tipping flow on the rating screen.
100% goes to the driver
Unlike the base fare (where Uber takes 20–30%), tips are not split with Uber. Every cent goes to the driver, before any platform fee. This is part of why tipping changed driver economics significantly — and why drivers genuinely appreciate it.
Drivers see the tip after — not during — the rating
On the driver side, the tip amount shows up in the earnings dashboard after the trip ends. The driver does NOT see the tip while you're rating them, so your tip doesn't pressure the rating. They also don't see who tipped on the rating screen — but they can cross-reference if they want to. Most don't bother.
You have 30 days to tip after the ride
If you forgot to tip on the rating screen, open the trip in your history → Help → Tip Driver. You have a 30-day window to add a tip. The charge hits your saved payment method and lands on the driver's account within minutes.

Do Uber drivers actually see your tip?
Yes. Uber drivers see the tip amount in their earnings statement after the trip, but they don't see who tipped (or didn't) on the rating screen. So tipping doesn't influence your rating in real time, but it shows up in the driver's daily earnings. Drivers who consistently get tipped average $3–$6 more per hour than drivers who don't.
Is it rude not to tip an Uber driver?
Tipping isn't mandatory, and Uber explicitly says tipping is optional. That said, gig drivers in the U.S. are independent contractors paying their own gas, insurance, and self-employment tax. Most drivers earn $9–$22/hour after expenses (2024 EPI study). A tip on a trip that went well isn't expected — but it materially helps. Skipping a tip on a $7 short trip is fine; skipping one on a $35 trip where the driver helped you with luggage is widely considered rude.
When should you tip more than 20% on Uber?
Round up generously when: the driver helped with bags or kids' car seats; you brought food or drinks (tip extra for cleanliness risk); it's late night or bad weather; the driver took a longer route at your request; you had a pet or extra passengers; or the driver was patient when you ran late. Top-quartile riders tip 25%+ in those situations.
How do I tip an Uber driver after the ride?
Open the Uber app, tap the rating screen at the end of the trip, choose a star rating, then tap the tip amount ($1, $2, $5, custom). If you've already rated without tipping, you have 30 days to go back: open the trip in your history → 'Help' → 'Tip Driver'. The tip charges to your saved payment method and shows in the driver's earnings within minutes.
Should you tip an Uber Eats driver?
Yes — and Uber Eats tips are expected more than rideshare tips, because the driver does the work after the order is placed (pickup, drive, doorstep). Industry norm: $3–$5 for most orders, 15–20% for orders over $30, and $5–$10 for large/heavy/multi-bag orders or bad-weather deliveries. Eats drivers earn $12–$25/hour gross, and tips often make up 25–30% of total earnings.
Can you tip an Uber driver in cash?
Yes. Cash tips are perfectly fine and 100% go to the driver (no Uber service-fee deduction, no tax withholding at the point of transfer — drivers report cash tips on their own taxes). Some drivers explicitly prefer cash. That said, ~85% of Uber tips are in-app — most riders don't carry cash anymore.
Does the Uber service fee include a tip?
No. The Uber service fee covers Uber's commission, insurance, technology, and operations. Drivers receive 75–80% of the base fare minus that fee, and zero of the service fee itself. The only money that goes directly to your driver above their base earnings is the tip you add.
