Baseline + adjustments How this calculator decides
18% baseline. Same as the standard restaurant tip in most U.S. cities. Bumps up to 22% for "Great" service, drops to zero for "Poor." 20% is at the higher end of normal; 25%+ is generous.
Situational add-ons. A late-night ride adds $1 + 2%. Airport pickup/drop-off adds $2 + 2% (long trip, often heavy bags). Driver helping with bags or kids' seats adds a flat $3. Bad weather (snow, heavy rain, extreme heat) adds $3 + 2%. Pet in the car adds $5 — pets require driver approval and add cleanup risk.
Short-trip floor. On fares under $8, a standard percentage tip is so small it borders on insulting. The calculator floors the tip at $2 in those cases.
Clean rounding. All amounts round up to the nearest 50 cents. A $4.30 number looks like math; a $4.50 number looks intentional.

How much should you tip an Uber driver?
15–20% of the fare is the standard, same as a sit-down restaurant. Short trips under $5 — round up to $2 instead of using a percentage. Long rides where the driver helped with bags — add $3–$5 on top of the standard percentage.
Why does this calculator round to the nearest 50 cents?
A $4.30 tip looks like a calculation; a $4.50 tip looks intentional. Rounding up to the nearest 50 cents (or whole dollar on bigger fares) keeps the math simple and the tip clean.
What if the ride was bad — should I tip $0?
Yes. Tipping isn't mandatory, and zero is the right call for a trip that went badly (unsafe driver, dirty car, intentional re-route to inflate fare, etc.). Leave a written reason in the rating so Uber sees the specifics — that's more useful to other riders than the silent star.
Do drivers see the tip before they rate me?
No. Drivers see the tip amount in their earnings dashboard after the trip ends, not on the rating screen. So your tip doesn't influence your rating in real time, but it absolutely shows up in their daily earnings.
